SIDEKICKS
We thought it was a great idea when Donna Plummer suggested that we include in the newsletter a section called "Sidekicks" where we would announce requests by club members to have other club members join them for various activities.
Here is our first request:
Joanne Stahl would like to hear from members interested in joining her in rafting on the Susquehanna or Juniata Rivers. She has two spots on her raft but invites those with their own rafts, kayaks, canoes, tires to meet her for a day on the river. Call Joanne at 545-5610.
We need the information by the 20th of the month in order to include it in that month's newsletter.

Compassionate Pet Cremation Services
Our newest club member Linda Corson operates Angel Pet
Services. She is offering the following:
Members of the Green Street Vegetarian Club will receive $5 off a private pet cremation or a $10 memorial donation will be given to the Green Street Vegetarian Club in memory of any pet who receives a private premation. Just mention that you are a GSVC member.
Your deceased pet can be picked up from your home or from the veterinarian. You can also bring your pet to Angel Pets. The pet's remains will be usually available to return home within 24-48 hours.
A miniature cedar chest is the standard urn; others can be special ordered, if desired. All pet parents will receive a Memorial Rainbow Crystal.
Communal Cremation is also available 365 days a year, by appointment.
The cremation service supports Angel Pet's other lifesaving programs, such as low cost spay/neuter, lost and found pet registry and assistance, live-trap loans for capturing lost and stray dogs and cats and for trapping cats for spay/neuter, adoption and placement advice and support, pet behavior counseling and referrals.

Volunteer with CPAA
The Central Pennsylvania Animal Alliance (CPAA) is calling on animal lovers to give a few hours of their time as volunteers to help CPAA reach its goal to create a no-kill community in central PA.
Volunteers can help transport animals to adoption events and share information about them with patential adopters. CPAA can also use more volunteers to simply spend time with the dogs and cats available for adoption.

Member Participation Requested
Heather Meledin sent us the following request:
In an effort to get the Green Street Vegetarian club participating more with local animal groups, we are asking for any suggestions for activities or groups that you would like the club to be involved with. Please contact Heather at 717-329-1934 or heather.meledin@gmail.com with any suggestions.
Heather currently volunteers with the Helen O. Krause Animal Foundation in Dillsburg with cats who have Feline AIDS. The shelter is always looking for volunteers to spend time with the cats and dogs who live there. If you would like to visit the shelter with Heather to see what is involved, please contact her as indicated above. She can also put you in touch with someone at the shelter for further information about the volunteer opportunities that are available.
Barb and Christine sent us the following announcement:
Leafleting for the Animals – Volunteers Needed
In the Harrisburg area there are several of us who have been leafleting for the animals this year and we are hoping to find others who can help us to spread the word and create more vegetarians. Just two of us were able to hand out over 4300 brochures in very limited time frames. You can reach 100’s of students during a single class break. It’s rewarding & enjoyable. If you would like to help us leaflet please contact Barb at blkeith@comcast.net or 717-939-2701.
We were inspired by groups such as The Humane League of Philadelphia and founder Nick Cooney. In the past 4 years they have handed out over 425,000 brochures. The Animal Awareness Project (Ellicott City, MD) has handed out 57,000 and states “one of our largest efforts is the distribution of V.O. brochures and we are able to reach 1000’s of people.” Compassion Over Killing in D.C. and the Humane League of Baltimore have reached nearly 100.000 people. Mercy For Animals in Chicago has found this so effective that they now have their name printed on the cover of the V.O. brochure and have passed out 191,000. These cities have created countless vegetarians as well as volunteers and advocates. Let’s change the
Harrisburg area next!
In a 2005-06 survey (conducted by Bon Appetit) among college students, an average of 8% identified as vegetarians, less than 1% as vegans. The 2009-10 survey, however, was very different. Twelve percent identified as vegetarians, and 2% as vegans.
That is a 50% increase in vegetarians and a doubling of vegans in just 4 years! That is very remarkable! Many of these students learned about vegetarianism by receiving free information on campus.
Vegan Outreach is an animal outreach program that prints brochures detailing factory farming and vegetarianism. They give their brochures free of charge to groups and persons willing to educate others who know little or nothing about the cruelties inflicted on animals.
Colleges, fairs, festivals, concerts, parks, and malls are great places to leaflet. If you are interested, visit Vegan Outreach’s website. They explain why leafleting is so effective and you can check out the brochures. Killing animals for food will probably never be outlawed but changing people’s hearts and minds will change their fate.
You can do so much good in so little time.
Thank you very much, Barb Keith & Christine Brewster

Tips For Vegans
Omega-3 essential fatty acids: It is very important that vegetarians and vegans regularly consume flax seed or flax seed oil in their diet, about 1 teaspoon of oil each day, or about 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed (grind fresh each day in a small coffee grinder). Ground flax seed can be sprinkled on cereals or salads.
Vitamin B-12: It is very important for vegans to get adequate amounts of vitamin B-12 fortified foods or take a B-12 supplement. A B-12 deficiency can lead to permanent nerve damage.
Calcium: A few studies have suggested that some vegans may fall short of calcium
requirements, raising their risk for bone fractures. (Many omnivores don’t get enough calcium, either, of course.). Recommended intake of calcium for adults is 1,000 mg per day. Here are some good vegan sources of calcium:
300 mg calcium: 1cup fortified orange juice or V8 juice, 1 cup fortified soymilk
200 mg calcium: 1 tbsp blackstrap molasses, ½ cup cooked collard greens, ½ cup calcium-set tofu, 1 ounce of fortified breakfast cereal
100 mg calcium: ½ cup cooked kale, turnip greens, or broccoli, ½ cup cooked soybeans , 5 dried figs
50 to 75 mg calcium: 2 tbsp almond butter or tahini, ½ cup prepared textured vegetable protein (TVP), ½ cup cooked bok choy, ½ cup tempeh, ½ cup cooked navy, black or great northern beans, ½ cup vegetarian baked beans, 1 orange, 2 tbsp almonds.

Do You Care About Animals?
Do You Think America is Ready for a Political Party that Will Help Protect Animals and the Environment?
The Humane Party is the U.S.A.'s first political party committed to:
1.Rights for all animals -- not just the human kind,
2.Full realization of an ecosystem-neutral, sustainably prosperous economy, and
3.Running and electing only candidates who have committed to humane values both personally and politically.
The Humane Party expects to run its first candidates for U.S. Senate and House of Representatives in 2014 and its first Presidential candidate in 2016. Humane Party chapters are forming in all states, and we need volunteers nationwide right now!
Humane Party Team Members Needed
Americans now stand squarely at the crossroads. We can set the United States on a path toward lasting peace and abundant prosperity. Or we can continue toward financial chaos, dependence on foreign resources, environmental destruction, economic disintegration, and moral lethargy.
The Humane Party is rising to meet the challenge. If you also feel called to action, we invite you to volunteer to be a part of the team - for our country, our planet and all her inhabitants.

End Cruelty to Animals With
The Humane USA PA PAC of Pennsylvania
Our Mission
The PAC’s mission is to increase the engagement of the Pennsylvania animal community in public policy and to elect officials who will support anti-cruelty legislation. We also hope to raise funds to financially support the election of candidates who believe that all living creatures should be treated compassionately and that deliberate acts of cruelty to animals are not acceptable in a civilized society.
We firmly believe that a critical step in achieving our goal of eliminating cruelty to animals within our Commonwealth, is to elect candidates who willingly demonstrate an understanding of the issues and the courage to support legislation, ordinances, and the regulations necessary to address and criminalize deliberate acts of cruelty
We also encourage everyone to get involved in the legislative process and get to know your legislators.
